Following the passing of the U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a scramble has ensued within the Democratic Party to find a suitable successor for the late congresswoman's seat in the 18th Congressional District of Texas. Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has thrown his hat into the ring, securing key family and political endorsements. According to the Houston Chronicle, Jackson Lee's children Jason Lee and Erica Lee Carter have backed Turner, a known ally of their mother, praising his ability to "dutifully and humbly serve" and bridge to the next generation of leadership.
Turner, who left City Hall at the end of last year, decided to re-emerge into the political landscape amidst the loss of a friend and the “unique circumstances” of the race, as it stands at a critical moment. He emphasized the need for "stability and continuity in leadership" to maintain the legislative momentum in the district, particularly when it comes to federal resource allocation. His aim is to address local challenges such as health care, flood mitigation, and education as detailed in a statement to FOX 26 Houston.
With the election around the corner, the Harris County Democratic Party's 88 precinct chairs residing in the district are tasked with selecting a nominee. This process, set to occur on August 13, comes with no time to initiate a new primary before the November general election. As the endorsement race heats up, Turner's candidacy has received a boost with names like Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher, State Representative Senfronia Thompson, County Judge Lina Hidalgo, and others from the local political sphere rallying behind him, as FOX 26 Houston reported.
Amid the endorsements and build-up to the nomination meeting, Turner continues to honor Jackson Lee's legacy by pledging to stand with the community on familiar ground, addressing pivotal local and national issues. Governor Greg Abbott has also called for a separate special election on November 5 to fill the rest of Jackson Lee's current term, ending in January. As the days narrow to the date of determination, the political atmosphere brims with anticipations, strategies, and the hope to fulfill a legacy that has catered to the 18th Congressional District for decades.
