A Franklin County grand jury has indicted Blendon Township police officer Connor Grubb on multiple charges stemming from the fatal shooting of Ta’Kiya Young, a 21-year-old pregnant Black woman in a grocery store parking lot last year. Grubb is facing charges that include murder, involuntary manslaughter, and felonious assault, as was reported by NBC4i.
As the events unfolded in August 2023, Young was suspected of shoplifting and was subsequently shot after she allegedly refused to exit her vehicle, and it began moving towards the officer. Charged with four counts of murder, the indictment details include felonious assault and two counts of involuntary manslaughter for the deaths of Young and her unborn daughter, who was accused of shoplifting and being pursued by the officer.
The indictment comes almost a year after the incident, which occurred on August 24, 2023. According to the Franklin County court records obtained by AP News, Officer Grubb, 29, stands accused of firing a single bullet through Young's windshield, which resulted in her and her expected daughter's death. The court records did not list an attorney for Grubb, and attempts to reach Blendon Township police for comment have so far been unanswered.
In response to the welcomed accountability, Sean Walton, the attorney representing Young's family, issued a statement to The Columbus Dispatch, saying, "Ta’Kiya’s life and that of her daughter were extinguished in an act of brutality, becoming yet another symbol of the urgent need for reform in police conduct and accountability." The statement highlighted the devastating impact of Young's loss on her family and touched upon the broader implications for change within the police force.
