An extensive investigation into alleged animal cruelty is underway in Harford County, where authorities have removed numerous animals from a property on W. Jarrettsville Road. The Sheriff's Office and Animal Control Officers conducted the seizure of 40 animals on August 8, an act preceded by several years of repeated complaints and warnings, as per a statement from the Harford County Sheriff's Office release.
Records show that since 2015, the owner of the property has had encounters with authorities over the care of animals more than 29 times. Despite prior warnings and a conviction for Animal Cruelty in 2021, conditions failed to improve. The latest investigation commenced after reports alleging inadequate care surfaced once again in mid-July of this year. Officers arriving on the scene found evidence to seriously question the welfare of the animals, a dire lack of potable water among the most glaring issues.
In the weeks that followed, steps were to indeed be taken to rectify the situation. The owner was instructed to have two injured animals seen by a Maryland licensed veterinarian immediately and was also given a mandate for the entire herd to be inspected. Despite initial compliance resulting in the euthanasia of two emaciated ewes, further inspections revealed that other corrections were not made. After failing to satisfy the demands of a July 22 inspection by a State-licensed veterinarian, the owner was granted a generous two-week grace period which he squandered, with even more animals added to the already crowded pens.
Inspectors returned to the property on August 5 and 6, only to find the owner still not to have complied with the improvements required by law or the veterinarian's instructions. A subsequent search and seizure warrant was promptly obtained and executed, culminating in the removal of dozens of animals to a local shelter for medical care and two pigs being euthanized due to poor health, as the release states.
