For the first time, the city will play host to the Clásico de México, a match that pits the famed Club América against their storied rivals, Chivas de Guadalajara. Known as “El Super Clásico," this event is a cultural phenomenon. The iconic clash is slated for October 13 at NRG Stadium, as reported by Fox 26 Houston.
Mayor John Whitmire said, "Soccer is in every one of our communities across our great city. To feature this championship is going to ignite the whole city as we build toward the World Cup." as reported by Fox 26 Houston, the event is expected to draw fans globally, combining the loves for sports and cultural festivities, especially during Hispanic Heritage Month.
Adding to the football frenzy is the promising FanFest, which promises to be a pre-match extravaganza outside NRG Stadium. Fans will get a taste of Mexico through food, music, and opportunities to interact with the alumni from both teams, as The Houston Chronicle highlighted. Topping off the experience will be live performances, mascots, and displays of each club's trophies.
"El Super Clásico" has seen its fair share of American soil in recent years, with previous editions being held in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta. The match in Los Angeles in 2024 even set an attendance record at the Rose Bowl with 86,134 enthusiasts—illustrating just how big the appetite for Mexican football is in the States. Fox 26 Houston reports that alongside the Houston event, San Antonio will cater to soccer fans as well, hosting the Clasico Regio between Tigres and Monterrey.
