A Jacksonville man, facing a minimum of a decade behind bars up to life, has entered a guilty plea on a federal drug trafficking charge. Michael Wayne Burroughs, 46, submitted his plea in connection to conspiring to distribute a significant quantity of methamphetamine, with a committed minimum at least ten years and a potential life sentence pending. Details of the sentencing phase have not been disclosed as of yet.

According to the U.S. Attorney's office, an undercover operation unfolded in 2022 when authorities first caught wind of Burroughs's activities. During the course of the investigation, federal agents managed to buy methamphetamine from Burroughs on three separate occasions at his residence using a confidential source. The investigation ramped up in 2023 when agents pinpointed Devan Hall as one of the key suppliers in Burrough's drug operation.

From April through June of 2023, surveillance by federal law enforcement observed multiple exchanges between Hall and Burroughs indicative of illicit drug trafficking. The arrests followed in July with Burroughs and Hall being taken into custody on criminal complaints. Hall, similarly facing severe legal repercussions, had already pleaded guilty and received a 10-year sentence on January 8, 2024, for his role in the distribution of methamphetamine.

The collaborative effort to dismantle this drug trafficking ring included the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, operating under the umbrella of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), which pursues high-level criminal enterprises that pose a risk to public safety. Assistant United States Attorney Aakash Singh is listed as the prosecutor for this case.
