A Kalamazoo man has been convicted of second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a 19-year-old in 2023. The jury also found the suspect, Catrell Keyshawn Woods, age 20, guilty of felony firearm charges. The conviction was announced by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety yesterday, as reported by MLive.

According to FOX 17, the incident unfolded on May 11, 2023, near Bridge Street and Gilbert Avenue where Omar’re Brishon Williams-Dickey was tragically shot in the head and later succumbed to his injuries. Following the event, found in the black Ford Fusion's trunk that Woods was driving, an assault rifle – a ghost gun lacking serial numbers or identifiable markings – was discovered, featuring a distinguishable shoelace tied to the trigger guard.

KDPS Captain Danielle Guilds praised the efforts of all parties involved in the investigation and subsequent conviction, saying, "This conviction is a testament to the tireless efforts of our officers, detectives, and prosecutors," as per a statement obtained by WOODTV. Additionally, the detectives used GPS tracking to place Woods at the scene of the crime when it took place and later found his DNA on the seized gun.

Woods is slated for sentencing on September 9, as evidenced by all three sources. The community remains urged by KDPS to participate in efforts to reduce gun violence by contacting the Criminal Investigation Division with any relevant information. As mentioned in FOX 17, KDPS Captain Guilds testified, "We remain steadfast in our commitment to investigating and prosecuting those responsible for gun violence in our community."
