Skaters, gardeners, and pickleball enthusiasts take note: Kirkland's Houghton area is getting a playful makeover. The City of Kirkland invites community members to usher in the new temporary Houghton Park and Play Park at the site of the former Houghton Park and Ride. The grand opening is slated for August 8, and the ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. with popsicles to sweeten the deal, as detailed by the City of Kirkland.
As part of a dynamic revamp, the city is rolling out a series of temporary recreational features designed to spruce up this 5-acre plot. According to the City of Kirkland, the project includes community gardens, modular skate and pump tracks, a bicycle play garden, and a dedicated space for the increasingly popular sport of pickleball. Councilmember John Tymczyszyn underscored the city's commitment to diverse and accessible recreational options, expressing excitement about the "fun transformation."
"We are very excited to celebrate this new temporary play space for pickleball players, gardeners, skaters and others at the former Houghton Park and Ride,” Tymczyszyn said, as stated by the City of Kirkland. This initiative reflects the City's broader investment in upgrading its recreational services to meet varied community needs while considering long-term plans for the space.
