Lake Austin is set to experience its annual personal watercraft ban to ensure the safety of holiday revelers over the Labor Day weekend. According to a notice by the Austin Police Department, personal watercraft such as jet skis, wet bikes, and motorized surfboards will be prohibited on the lake starting at sunset on Friday, August 30, and the ban will extend until sunrise on Tuesday, September 3. This ban, as revealed in City Ordinance 8-5-81, is aimed specifically at mitigating risks associated with heightened use of the popular waterway during the holiday period.

The restriction comes off of the back of increased safety concerns that accompany large gatherings and extensive use of the lake. While the ban is in effect, non-motorized vessels like kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards will still be allowed to cut through the lake's waters. The APD Lake Patrol Unit has been given the charge to strictly enforce the ordinance and will be out in full force to quickly and comprehensively ensure compliance. They will also be underscoring the importance of adhering to the Texas Water Safety Act and other local boating laws and ordinances.

The Austin Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with the APD, is focusing on a simple message for the public—to enjoy the parks and lakes while maintaining a high standard of safety. This proactive measure seeks to reduce water traffic and the potential for accidents. As explained in the notice, the ordinance spells out specific times throughout the year when high traffic on Lake Austin necessitates such action, including the periods around Memorial Day, Labor Day, and the Fourth of July holiday.

In light of the upcoming ban, authorities are urging boaters to not only stay on the right side of the lake unless assisting a downed water skier but also not to operate watercraft at speeds greater than what may be reasonable and prudent given the circumstances. This measure reflects the city's commitment to safeguarding both participants and the natural beauty of Lake Austin. Those planning to spend their holiday on or around the water are encouraged to abide by boating laws and to reach out to emergency services at 9-1-1 in case of any reckless operations or emergencies.
