A tragic rollover incident involving a John Deere Gator claimed the life of a 14-year-old in Lapeer County this past weekend. The Lapeer County Sheriff's Office reported that the accident occurred around 2:35 p.m. last Saturday, according to ABC12. An 11-year-old was at the helm of the Gator with his older sibling as a passenger when they were navigating their Klam Road residence in the Otter Lake area.
The younger brother, serving as the driver, maneuvered the vehicle from a mowed area into an unmowed section, hitting a bush that caused the Gator to overturn. As reported by the sheriff's office, per MLive, the 14-year-old was not wearing a seatbelt and became pinned under a support pillar of the vehicle's roof. Family members tried to lift the Gator using a floor jack and a four-wheeler, which was nearby, and finally, with the aid of a tractor, they managed to extricate the adolescent.
Emergency crews attending to the scene provided life-saving techniques but were unable to revive the youth. He was pronounced dead upon his arrival at McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital, as detailed by ABC12. It was reported that the boys' parents were providing supervision during the excursion around their yard. The police have deemed the incident "preventable and tragic."
The unfolding of the accident included an attempt to use a quad runner in the rescue efforts, which proved unsuccessful, as per WXYZ. This eventually led to the deployment of a tractor to release the trapped teen from beneath the vehicle's metal support. According to the information from the Lapeer County Sheriff's Office, neither of the children was wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
The Lapeer County Sheriff's Office is conducting a thorough investigation into the crash. They were assisted by the office's reconstruction team and the Lapeer County Sheriff's Victims Service Unit, as detailed by sources. The name of the young victim has not been released to the public at this time, as the incident remains under scrutiny, per the ongoing investigation.
