As the unforgiving heat of the desert continues to cast its presence over Las Vegas, residents can expect the mercury to push a few degrees higher than usual through Friday. The National Weather Service in Reno, operating for the Las Vegas area, published their forecast indicating that temperatures will sit 2 to 5 degrees above the norm for this time of year. However, the scorching heat isn't the only thing on watch, as the weekend forecasts spell the return of monsoonal moisture, bringing prospects of showers and thunderstorms to southeast Nevada, northwest Arizona, and the eastern Mojave Desert of California.
This uptick in temperatures comes courtesy of a "subtropical ridge axis suppressed to our south," as the National Weather Service Reno NV's report suggests. Southwesterly winds are set to add a breezy gust to the sizzling days ahead, occasionally reaching speeds of 20 to 30 mph. The shift to a south-southeasterly flow on Friday is key, as it cracks open the doorway for increased storm chances and the monsoon moisture over the weekend.
Zooming out to the long term, the weather pattern undergoes a significant shuffle as we push into Saturday and through to next Tuesday. The desert is caught between a trough of low pressure on the West Coast and a ridge over the Central United States. This setup fosters a south-southwesterly aloft flow, priming conditions for monsoonal moisture to surge up the Colorado River Valley into the forecast area. "Precipitation chances increase Saturday afternoon and return each afternoon through Tuesday,” according to the NWS forecast discussion. The greatest likelihood of rain will hover over northwestern Arizona and the southeastern Nevada mountains, though there's a bit of a guess game for zones to the west.
With regards to aviation interests, such as at Harry Reid, expect those south-southwesterly components to continue their reign. "Wind speeds through 19z will generally be around 8-12 knots with isolated gusts to around 18 knots. Southwest winds will increase to around 10-15 knots with gusts to around 20 knots after 19z. Skies will remain clear," the National Weather Service Reno NV reports. For pilots navigating the broader areas of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona, and southeast California, anticipate predominantly clear skies alongside steady south-southwest winds through this afternoon, with some regional variations.
Local spotters have been put on alert; their role becomes increasingly crucial as the weather shifts. They have been encouraged to report any significant weather events or impacts, adhering to standard operating procedures.
