In an homage to the profound losses of September 11th, the City of Laurel is calling upon its people to unite in a novel way—a push-up challenge spanning from 9:11 AM to 9:11 PM on the attack's anniversary this year. The event will be hosted in collaboration with local eatery Mission BBQ and backed by the stalwart efforts of Army Veteran SGT Pushup, as detailed by the city's news release.
Mayor Keith R. Sydnor put forth a rallying cry for inclusivity, stating, "We are encouraging everyone, regardless of fitness level, to join us in this effort," according to the city's press release on the challenge. The collective goal is set ambitiously at 91,111 push-ups representing the steadfast endurance of a community bonded by tragedy and hope for the event means not merely recalling a day of profound sorrow, but engaging in a shared gesture of endurance and mutual support.
As a show of their resolve, participants are to submit their push-up tallies to the mayor's office via email at [email protected]—and they're not to keep their efforts to themselves. The challenge seeks to ripple through social media, with people urged to brandish their involvement with the #LaurelMDRemembers911 hashtag.
