
A man was fatally shot by police officers on Monday night in Southwest Baltimore, according to local authorities. The shooting occurred in the vicinity of West Baltimore and South Stricker Streets at around 9:15 p.m. Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that the officers, while on patrol, encountered a person they suspected to be armed. As reported by WMAR-2 News, the situation escalated when the man fled upon being approached, which led to a chase and subsequent confrontation.
The confrontation led to a physical struggle, during which multiple officers discharged their firearms. The man, whose identity has not been released, did not survive the encounter. Worley commented on the encounter, noting, "It was what we call characteristics of an armed person." He elaborated that the officers who opened fire were yet to provide their statements but assured that their observations would be part of the detailed investigation. Recovered from the scene was a firearm, as detailed by CBS News Baltimore.
No injuries were reported among the officers involved in the incident. The Baltimore Police Department is actively collaborating with the Attorney General's Office to fully investigate the shooting. Mayor Brandon Scott expressed regret over the unfortunate event and was cited by CBS News Baltimore saying, "None of use wish to ever be here for a situation like this." Mayor Scott also urged residents to avoid resolving conflicts with guns and spoke on the need for healing within the community.
In the aftermath of the shooting, police promptly attempted to administer first aid, but the man was declared deceased at the scene.
