As Labor Day weekend approaches, Michiganders are receiving some road relief from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). In a bid to ease holiday weekend traffic congestion, MDOT is lifting a significant portion of its construction project lane restrictions statewide. The adjustments will take place starting at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30 and will last until 6 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 3, ensuring travelers less time in traffic and more time enjoying the waning days of summer.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the temporary reprieve in construction efforts, stating, "Labor Day weekend is reminder that it's time to soak up the last few weeks of our Pure Michigan summer sunshine," as reported by WWMT. Whitmer continued by reminding constituents that post-holiday, the state will resume its efforts to improve infrastructure.
While a large number of projects will see lane restrictions lifted, certain areas and setups will persist through the weekend. Equipment may remain, and temporary traffic shifts or shoulder closures will still be present. Motorists are advised to stay vigilant for remaining work zones and configurations that could impact their routes. For detailed information on the specific zones that will remain in action throughout the holiday period, travelers can visit MDOT’s website, as WILX highlighted in its coverage.
A notable closure will be the Mackinac Bridge, which will be inaccessible to public vehicles from 6:30 a.m. to noon on Labor Day due to the Annual Bridge Walk. This planned interruption will affect traffic in both directions. Southbound I-75, and US-2 traffic will be held at Exit 344, and northbound I-75 will be stopped at Exit 337, as CBS News Detroit reported. With more than half of the traffic restrictions lifted for Michigan's numerous road and bridge projects, the state aims to ensure a smoother travel experience during the popular holiday.
