Michigan drivers are witnessing a steady descent in gas prices, with the average cost for regular unleaded gasoline now at $3.58 per gallon, marking a 10-cent reduction from the previous week. The prices have consistently trended downwards, as observed last month and last year, providing some relief for motorists during fill-ups.
In a more granular look across the state, the fluctuations in gas prices are quite noticeable. Ann Arbor's gas remains the priciest at $3.68 per gallon, while Flint offers a respite with the lowest price at $3.46. The declining price pattern reflects broader trends, including a reported decrease in gas demand, which fell to 8.96 million barrels a day, concurrently with a rise in domestic gasoline stocks to 225.1 million barrels, as noted by the Detroit Free Press.
Gary Bubar, the spokesperson for AAA-The Auto Club Group, weighed in on the pricing trend, stating, "Michigan motorists are seeing lower prices at the pump". As per the Detroit Free Press, he projected that "Lower gasoline demand amid higher oil costs may lead to flat or slowly rising pump prices." Metro Detroit, specifically, saw a nominal decrease, settling at an average of $3.63, down from $3.69 compared to last week and significantly lower than the $3.81 marked around last year.
While the reduced prices favor consumers, the oil market dynamics continue to be watched closely. Crude oil inventories have seen a downturn by 3.7 million barrels, leaving U.S. crude inventories about 6% below the five-year average for this part of the year. This was captured in a midweek report, which mentioned a per-barrel cost uptick, with crude oil rising to $75.23, as detailed by The Detroit News.
In southwestern Michigan, prices also reflect this downward trend with Kalamazoo County at $3.61, Van Buren County at $3.56, and others like St. Joseph and Allegan counties aligning closely, according to WKZO. Situated in this economic environment, Michigan's drivers continue to benefit from these easing prices, even if by tentative degrees.
