The Michigan State Police's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division is unveiling a new digital crusade aimed at beefing up safety communications directly with commercial truck drivers across the state. Via their Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), which are federally mandated for recording hours of service (HOS), truckers will now receive instantaneous safety messages about potential roadway hazards or impending enforcement operations.

In layman's terms, the messages will be short and to the point, a mere 25 characters, designed to stand out in bright yellow against the ELD's display. Think of these as quick, digital nudges aimed at promoting foresight and caution among those commanding the wheel of big rigs. The information conveyed through this system was developed by Drivewyze, Inc., and according to the Michigan State Police, Michigan is the latest to adopt the strategy, joining a band of several states already on board.

"Safer commercial drivers make for safer roadways for all roadway users," MC Insp. Patrick Morris emphasized during an announcement of the initiative, as per the Michigan State Police. This digital messaging is expected to complement ongoing education and enforcement efforts focused on preventing traffic incidents and injuries on Michigan's thoroughfares.

Increased traffic safety enforcement is also part of the initiative, targeting unsafe driving behaviors and snagging the cause of crashes—speeding, tailgating, reckless maneuvers, and distracted driving due to texting or phone handling. These digital prompts are expected to be particularly useful preceding high-traffic holidays and in scenarios braced with specific driving challenges.
