A Minneapolis family is pursuing legal action against Summit County in Ohio, among others, over allegations surrounding a murder case from August 2022. The lawsuit stems from the death of Ryan Peterson, husband of Kassie Peterson, who was killed in what has been described as a home invasion.
In a statement obtained by News5Cleveland, Janet Peterson, the mother of the deceased victim, expressed her concerns regarding the system's management of individuals like the accused, Franklin White. "I fear for many, many people who are potentially in danger because of a system that handles people in this way," she said. According to reports by News5Cleveland, the Peterson family is still grappling with the loss, accentuated by the harrowing experience of Kassie Peterson, who witnessed her husband's murder. Janet lamented that her daughter-in-law "will never be able to be completely whole."
Details have surfaced regarding the circumstances leading to Ryan Peterson's death. A wrongful death lawsuit alleges White cut off his ankle monitor and made the more than 11-hour drive to the victim's home. As reported by CBS News Minnesota, the Petersons were allegedly familiar with the suspect, Franklin White, who had been a high school classmate of Kassie Peterson in Ohio and was said to be "obsessed" with her.
A further complication in the case, as reported by KARE 11, is the criticism of criminal justice reforms in Summit County, which are aimed at reducing the jailing of suspects awaiting trials. The lawsuit contends that these reforms allowed White to escape supervision at a court-ordered halfway house seemingly and subsequently travel to Minnesota to commit the crime. The narrative captures the Petersons' call for accountability and desire to ensure such an event does not reoccur, questioning the balance between criminal justice efficiency and public safety.
