The Monroe Police Department continues their search for Cleveland Lamont Waters, a 42-year-old Waxhaw resident, after his escape from custody during an undercover operation on May 31. Waters is wanted on multiple charges including attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, WCCB Charlotte reports.
Police say the incident began when Waters allegedly shot someone multiple times early in the morning on English Street, with the victim later found collapsed on Winchester Avenue, this according to WSOCTV; the victim survived after being transported to a hospital. Waters was later identified, arrested at his Locklyn Road home where firearms and illegal narcotics were found, yet during a staged operation with detectives he managed to escape when the police vehicle he was in collided with an unoccupied parked car, and then many officers scrambled in an attempt to capture Waters as he fled on foot.
Described as a black male last seen wearing black pants and a red shirt, Waters remains at large with active warrants out for his arrest; Monroe Police have emphasized his status as armed and dangerous, acknowledging the severity of his initial charges and the added concern due to his successful evasion of law enforcement during a calculated operation aimed at curbing local narcotics trafficking.
The authorities, composed of Monroe Police, Waxhaw Police, and the Union County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team, have urged the public not to approach Waters if spotted but to immediately call 911.
