A beacon of hope for children affected by abuse is rising in Conroe, the nonprofit organization Children's Safe Harbor has broken ground on a new $10 million facility aimed at providing them with the justice and healing they deserve. According to Victoria Constance, Children's Safe Harbor executive director, "When we can find investigative healing, space and justice for them, they really do go on and they grow and have families and jobs, and they contribute," a sentiment she expressed with optimism despite the inherent distress in their clients' circumstances, as the Houston Chronicle reports.
The construction on Loop 336 East is on a 17-acre site and is designed as a 45,000-square-foot building wrapped in pines and featuring a healing garden aimed at promoting privacy and recovery. State Rep. Will Metcalf was part of the financial force behind the project, securing $5 million from the Department of Family and Protective Services, alongside donations from the community amounting to the same figure, including $2.5 million from the Woodforest Charitable Foundation; this according to the same Community Impact report.
In 2023, Children's Safe Harbor provided services to over two thousand young individuals and reviewed close to nine thousand reports of child abuse. The new center will be set to entail an investigation wing, a medical clinic, and eight forensic interviewing rooms that serve as a testament to the nonprofit's 26-year commitment to aiding abused children.
Constance, who has lived a life dedicated to aiding the most vulnerable, told Community Impact that she sees her mission as a calling, "These kids didn’t ask to be assaulted or harmed," elucidating the severe lack of innocence in such cases. Matthew Rodrigue, the president of Children’s Safe Harbor. The facility is expected to welcome its first footsteps in the fall of 2025.
