The earth beneath Southern Nevada gave a sudden, unannounced nudge yesterday as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake hit the region. The tremor, centered near Indian Springs about 30 miles northwest of Las Vegas, sent ripples of concern but fortunately, no reports of damage or injury emerged in its wake. News 3 LV reported that the quake followed several seismically active weeks throughout the neighboring Southern California area.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, as captured in FOX Weather's coverage, the initial earthquake struck at precisely 8:06 p.m. The earth's movement was registered at a depth of roughly 8.2 miles. A noticeable aftershock, with a magnitude of 2.9, followed a mere six minutes later in an the same vicinity.
Despite the earth's unpredictable shudder, residents of Las Vegas and nearby areas managed to avoid the wrath often associated with such geological disturbances. This came as a small comfort given the recent memory of a more considerable quake that initially registered at 5.6 near Bakersfield, later downgraded to 5.2, on the previous Tuesday, August 6.
