Ohio Faces Surge in Pediatric Marijuana Exposures as Edibles Incidents RiseSource: elsaolofsson, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

The recent spike in marijuana exposures among children in Ohio has reached alarming levels, with Nationwide Children's Hospital reporting a projected 49% increase compared to the previous year, as detailed by ABC6. The incidents have escalated even before the start of recreational sales at dispensaries.

In the year 2023, Ohio Poison Centers tallied 234 cases of edible cannabis exposure among children under 6. This year's data indicates there have already been 204 exposures in the same age bracket, according to records up until July 31, 2024. In a statement obtained by ABC6, a Columbus mother expressed her distress, saying, "I was a mess. I am still emotional about it. Just seeing your child like helpless and in that situation is just difficult," after her son accidentally consumed weed gummies.

Her 7-year-old son, a student at Fairwood Elementary, experienced marijuana intoxication and needed urgent medical care in March 2023. The mother, who chose to remain anonymous to protect her child's identity, felt compelled to publicize her ordeal to raise awareness of the potential dangers posed by cannabis edibles to children. My FOX28 Columbus also reported on the incident.

As the numbers of edible exposures rise, so do concerns among parents and health professionals regarding the accessibility and appeal of these products to young children. These episodes of unintended ingestion call into question the balance between the legalization of cannabis for adult use and the protection of our most vulnerable citizens, the children whose understanding of these substances is not yet fully formed.
