Chaos ensued Friday night as a high school football game became the backdrop for a shooting in Turtle Creek, prompting a heavy police presence and immediate suspension of the sporting event. As the Woodland Hills Wolverines took on the Penn Hills Indians, gunshots rang out, leaving one man wounded in the leg. Allegheny County 911 confirmed that emergency units were dispatched to the Wolvarena stadium at approximately 10:06 p.m., as per WPXI's reporting.
Authorities swiftly responded to the incident, which took place in the 900 block of Oak Avenue. The victim, having left the game earlier, found himself suddenly and tragically in gunfire. Despite his injury, the man managed to run back to the stadium to seek assistance, according to WTAE. Hospitalized and then released, his physical wounds may heal faster than the communal psyche.
Friday's game was immediately postponed, leaving both teams and their supporters to grapple with the disruption. Woodland Hills School District Superintendent Dan Castagna expressed gratitude towards the first responders and school staff whose actions ensured everyone's safety. "Local law enforcement responded immediately, and to ensure the safety of all in attendance, the game was immediately halted and the stadium was cleared," Castagna said in a statement cited by WTAE. Further, the statement underscored the district's relief that students, athletes, and spectators were unharmed.
As the investigation continues, local authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward and contact the police tip line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS.
