As Orange County Public Schools gear up to welcome students for the 2024/2025 academic year, the focus is sharply set on ensuring their journey to and from school is as safe as possible. Public Works in Orange County is taking significant strides to improve pedestrian safety, acknowledging the increased risks as part of their Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities, and the Accelerated Transportation Safety programs currently in motion, according to Orange County's newsroom.
Key improvements have been made along the bustling corridor of Oak Ridge Road, according to a statement obtained by Orange County. These measures were necessitated by the proximity of Sadler Elementary School and Westridge Middle School to this high-traffic area. Commuters have witnessed enhancements to sidewalks, raised medians installed for better pedestrian protection, improved lighting, and resurfaced roads.
Public Works Department Manager Humberto Castillero emphasized the intention behind these modifications. "We want to make sure we're committed to the planning, construction, design and implementation of road safety improvements, as well as preventing all pedestrian fatalities as part of Vision Zero," Castillero told Orange County's newsroom. He explained that their strategy does not focus on drivers alone but encompasses a broad spectrum of road users, including children who are the most vulnerable commuters on the roads.
“Kids should be focused on getting good grades, not surviving getting to and from school,” Castillero asserted, marking a poignant reflection of the responsibility the community holds. Signage improvements, pedestrian barriers, and traffic calming measures are just a few examples of the comprehensive measures being taken to foster safety. Castillero also recommended that parents do a trial run before the school year commences to better acquaint themselves and their offspring with the changes, as detailed by Orange County's newsroom.
Orange County is actively encouraging residents to become familiar with pedestrian safety guidelines which can be found on their official Pedestrian Safety page.
