Orange County's financial outlook shines a bit brighter with the latest Tourist Development Tax (TDT) report, as announced by Mayor Jerry L. Demings. In a recent Orange County press release on August 6th, Mayor Demings highlighted a 1.7% increase in TDT collections for June 2024 as compared to the same month last year, with over $30.5 million in revenue. This marks a 7.6% hike from the previous month of May. With the travel industry steady on its feet, the TDT continues to serve as a gauge for tourism and economic trends in the heart of Central Florida.
In what can only be described as a boon for the local economy, the AAU Volleyball events at the Orange County Convention Center played a significant role in bolstering the TDT figures throughout June and into July. The statement from Mayor Demings also reveals that this sustained surge in tourism activity is positioning the TDT to potentially match last year's record-setting inflow of $359 million.
Mayor Demings' statement also pointed out a considerable growth in TDT reserves, with a commendable increase of $12.7 million in just one month. This notable rise brings the total reserve funds to over $408 million. The reserves are earmarked for community betterment, pouring into local venues, cultural arts, and the maintenance and improvement of the Convention Center.
