The Philadelphia area braces for tumultuous weather as multiple advisories, including a Tornado Watch and Wind Advisory, have been issued by the National Weather Service. Portions of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, particularly areas along the I-95 corridor, are expected to face severe thunderstorms with the potential for significant wind gusts throughout the day.
According to the National Weather Service, "South winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph", residents are advised to secure loose objects and be wary of potential power outages due to falling tree limbs. The Wind Advisory is in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening for impacted regions including Morris, Hunterdon, Somerset, and other local counties. Travel could be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles due to these windy conditions.
In addition to winds, the weather also poses a flooding threat. A Coastal Flood Advisory has been established, anticipating up to one half foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways until 10 PM EDT this evening. This means that some roads may become impassable, and residents in affected areas - like Gloucester, Camden, and Northwestern Burlington in New Jersey, and Delaware, Philadelphia, and Lower Bucks in Pennsylvania - should prepare for potential flood conditions.
The heavy rainfall has also triggered a Flood Watch that encompasses multiple counties in both New Jersey and Southeast Pennsylvania, raising concerns about rising creeks, urban flooding, and the need for vigilant preparedness. The NWS advises that Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. As the day progresses, the heavy rains could bring rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches with locally higher amounts of 3 inches or more possible, which increases the potential for significant flooding.
Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts, heed the warnings from local authorities and be ready to take action if flooding develops. Staying informed and prepared is crucial during such severe weather events, and updates can be checked through National Weather Service website.
