Philadelphia's justice system marked a significant victory as District Attorney Larry Krasner announced the conviction of Marquise Alexander, a 28-year-old man found guilty of a violent home invasion and gunpoint robbery that took place in the city's East Germantown neighborhood in August of last year. According to a news release by the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office, Alexander's conviction encompasses charges of robbery, conspiracy, theft, possession of an instrument of crime, as well as multiple firearms-related offenses under the VUFA code.
The incident occurred on August 16, 2023, when victim Otis Ryans, confronted by Alexander, his grocery store coworker, and an unidentified accomplice at his doorstep, chose to allow them entry in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. A confrontation ensued, culminating in the theft of Ryan's licensed firearm and other valuables, with Alexander and his associate subsequently fleeing the scene. As reported by NBC Philadelphia, Alexander, who was on parole for previous robberies, then ceased reporting to his parole officer and absconded from Philadelphia.
ADA Kelsey Gimaro, credited with the successful prosecution, emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for actions that disrupt community safety. "I’m proud of the fact that this dangerous individual will be held accountable for his inexcusable behavior," said Gimaro, in statements obtained by the PHL17 news outlet. In the wake of the verdict, Ryans expressed gratitude for the support received, particularly noting ADA Gimaro's efforts and the involvement of Philadelphia Police Officer O'Neill during the investigation. "I also want Mr. Alexander to know the damage you've caused me, financially and emotionally. I probably won't ever get a 'sorry', but you've already been forgiven," Ryans conveyed.
