The City of Philadelphia has recently secured a substantial federal grant aimed at boosting energy efficiency and fostering conservation efforts across the region. A total of $1,316,810 is slated to bolster diverse initiatives, from energy education to the creation of more resilient and sustainable urban infrastructure, as reported by the City of Philadelphia Government. This grant is sourced from the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program and falls under the wider umbrella of funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
The Office of Sustainability (OOS) and the Energy Coordinating Agency (ECA), in partnership with local energy centers, will escalate their outreach and resource offerings to these vulnerable populations. Additionally, the grant will back the introduction of an electric Mobile Energy Center, targeted at supporting working families and those less mobile, such as elderly residents.
OOS, collaborating with ECA, will pilot these cool roof applications in select communities and look to fill any gaps identified in the existing policies. "we look for every opportunity to make Philadelphia a safer, cleaner, and greener city with economic opportunity for all, we are excited to deploy this federal funding from the Biden-Harris Administration on projects that advance Mayor Parker’s clean and green agenda” Sinceré Harris, Chief Deputy Mayor, told phila.gov, reflecting a broader move to tackle urban heat islands and support community health and prosperity.
Moreover, the grant will help forge a strategy for clean energy workforce development, a necessity given the scope of Philadelphia's building decarbonization goals. Philadelphia's buildings account for a troubling 70 percent of its greenhouse gas emissions, spurring the need for a clean energy transition that not only addresses environmental concerns but also fosters employment. Elizabeth Lankenau, Interim Director of the OOS, noted the importance of building "As the clean energy transition gains momentum, our office is exploring what it takes to build a robust, sustained clean energy workforce that creates wealth opportunities for Philadelphians," as reported by the City of Philadelphia Government.
As the School District of Philadelphia embarks on its green journey, the federal grant assures assistance in managing its vast energy portfolio across over 200 buildings.
