The Pittsburgh Public School District, grappling with years of steady enrollment decline, is presenting a controversial plan to close 16 schools and reconfigure others, in response, they're hosting public meetings to collect community feedback. According to WTAE, the district's spokesperson underscored this proposal springs from a protracted drop in student numbers, constraining the district's ability to offer equitable education across all schools.
In a public meeting on Tuesday, Jay Walker, the school board president, attempted to frame the debate, saying, "The idea around looking at our facilities was not trying to figure out how we could close or move schools around but how we could deliver education better," a sentiment that was echoed by the district superintendent Dr. Wayne Walters who spoke of transforming education across the entire district, these comments were reported by WPXI.
The ERS consultant group recommended four types of changes that were presented in the meeting, including consistent school grade configurations and consolidating undersubscribed schools, Megan Zeigler from Spring Hill agreed with the thrust of these recommendations, she stated, "If they can consolidate the schools, improve the schools, improve the services, reduce class size then I know that’s the direction we need to go,” as per WPXI report. However, not all parents are on board, with concerns ranging from the dilution of specialized programs to the increased travel times for students, for example, one parent highlighted the significant increase in travel time that could happen if CAPA was moved to Manchester, this would require a 75-minute commute.
The district is currently soliciting input through both public forums and online surveys before the final proposal is made, upcoming Regional Community Input Sessions are slated for September 3 at Pittsburgh Allderdice High School, September 4 at Pittsburgh Carrick High School, and September 5 at Pittsburgh Arsenal 6-8, additionally, a virtual session is set for September 11.
