In what turned out to be an edge-of-the-seat contest, the Cleveland Guardians edged past the Chicago Cubs with a close 9-8 win, a game that had fans reminiscing about the dramatic 2016 World Series encounter. Jhonkensy Noel, a power-hitting rookie, emerged as the hero of the night with two homers, contributing significantly to the Guardian’s victory at Progressive Field, as was reported by WKYC.
The Guardians, who currently top the AL Central rankings, had just returned from a split series against Minnesota. Noel, the man of the moment, launched a three-run homer in the fourth inning followed by a solo drive in the sixth, ostensibly putting the Guards in a comfortable lead. However, the Cubs weren’t going down without a fight as they fired back with four runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to tie the game, Cleveland 19 reported.
But it was Josh Naylor who drove in José Ramírez with an eighth-inning single, eventually putting the Guardians ahead. José Ramírez had opened with a double before scoring the decisive run, prompting Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt to commend his team's resilience. "We’re proving to ourselves we can win a number of different ways," Vogt said, as detailed in an interview by AP News. "That’s one of the first time all year we’ve been punched back like that late in the game, and for our guys to respond and put runs up late, that’s huge."
Not to be overshadowed by the Rookie's stellar offensive play, the Guardians' closer Emmanuel Clase locked in his 36th save of the season, shutting down the Cubs in the ninth inning to secure the win. Noel also shined on defense, making a diving catch in right field that prevented more runs, as the Guardians improved their formidable home record to 36-20, per WKYC. The tension was palpable as a sense of déjà vu from the 2016 series added an additional layer of excitement to an already thrilling game.
