As San Antonio students embark on a new academic year, the landscape of their educational journey has noticeably shifted. The San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) has implemented significant changes following the closure of over a dozen schools, as part of its "rightsizing" strategy aimed at streamlining resources, as KSAT reported. These closures have necessitated the redesign of the district’s transportation network.

Starting Tuesday, the shuttered campuses will function in their new role as bus stops, explained Nathan Graf, SAISD’s senior executive director of transportation. These spots are not new to the district's parents and students, allowing for a smoother transition amid the changes. Graf informed that the district’s pre-k centers mostly closed along with the schools, which has led to a combined transportation system for pre-k and elementary school students, as confirmed by WOAI.

There's a practical nuance to the structural shift; buses that previously served only Pre-K students are no longer in operation. Consequently, Pre-K children will be riding alongside elementary students on buses equipped with car seats designed for younger riders. "They’re little miniature car seats embedded into the bus seat. And then it has a little three-point seatbelt that goes around our kids," as Graf quoted to KSAT.

To mitigate worries that naturally arise from such transitions, the district has assured that monitors will be present on buses transporting Pre-K students. Moreover, parents have been prompted to complete the obligatory Pre-K Ridership form for their young bus riders, if they have not done so already, which will have these tiny passengers' safety buckled into their miniature seats, as per Graf's statement to KSAT.
