The first day of the new school year at Sto-Rox High School unfolded not just with the clatter of school buses and the whisper of opening books, but with a vibrant celebration where students were welcomed with an outpouring of community support, and cheers, a community pep rally that might set the tone for the rest of the academic year, as reported by WTAE.
Arriving students stepped off their buses to an upbeat environment punctuated by music, cheers, and handmade signs, a testament to the community's investment in their success. This fresh approach to the first day was sparked by the brainchild of Edward Pierce, the district's newly minted community liaison—also known to many as "Coach Ed," who described the rally by saying, "It’s more to get them ready, get them hyped up, let them know we’re here cheering on them," he relayed in a statement as reported by WPXI.
But the new school year ushered in change alongside the festivities, students now must adhere to an updated dress code outlawing jeans, open-toed shoes, and large logos, a shift aimed to minimize distractions and, as Superintendent Megan Van Fossan hopes, foster a focus on academics while some students like senior Ciana Mason, initially rankled at the change, have come to appreciate the simplicity it brings, “I was upset about it first but I like it now,” senior Ciana Mason said. “It was likeuh you don’t got to look at what you’re wearing, so you know it’s easy, quick and easy”, as cited by WPXI.
Van Fossan shared a positive outlook on the new dress code, attested to by an encouraging scene of well-dressed students on the first morning, "Kids are kids and not all of them like it. But I gotta tell you, they looked great this morning," she conveyed to WPXI. As Sto-Rox High kicks off a year that may be laden with challenges and discoveries, the administration stands at the ready, united in its commitment to the student's educational journey and personal growth.
