Over the past weekend, a suspect was arrested after using an ax to damage multiple police vehicles in Howell. According to a report by FOX 2 Detroit, witnesses saw the individual smashing the windows of patrol cars parked at the Howell Police Department around 2:25 p.m. on Saturday. Despite promptly responding to 911 calls, the officers did not to quickly apprehend the suspect at the scene; he had vanished, leaving behind three damaged patrol vehicles and a code enforcement vehicle.

Following the incident, an extensive search operation was mounted with the Hamburg Township Police Department and the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office lending their assistance, incorporating the use of drones and a canine. WILX revealed that despite the initial search proving fruitless, authorities obtained a solid description of the suspect through surveillance footage from nearby Ring cameras. The suspect later turned himself into authorities and was arrested at approximately 5:30 p.m. the same day.

The police have identified the man as someone who is well-known to them and who suffers from mental health issues. The suspect's motives for the destruction are unclear, but the Howell Police Department was quick to shut down speculation on social media about potential motives related to police procedures or ongoing construction at City Hall. "Contrary to propaganda and misinformation that continues to be spread on social media, this had nothing to do with the placement of the patrol units nor the construction taking place in City Hall," a statement obtained by FOX 2 Detroit.

The damaged vehicles were reportedly moved to "a secure location" to prevent further access and weather damage. As of now, the suspect has yet to be charged, and according to Livingston Daily, his identity is not being released at this time. The Howell Police Department has further clarified that there has never been an enclosed area for their patrol cars, which had been moved to the southeast side of the City Hall building after the department was relocated to the second floor. This information came in an effort to dismiss any conjectures associated with the vehicles' placement during the time of the vandalism.
