The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office disclosed the arrest of 25-year-old Shawn Gossett on multiple charges, among them, four counts of first-degree murder. Authorities allege that Gossett intentionally set ablaze a residence in Plant City, which led to the deaths of four individuals and three dogs.
The fateful call to the HCSO arrived at 12:08 a.m. on July 31, reporting a potential fire on South County Line Road, according to a press release from the sheriff's office. Firefighters battling the flames made the grisly discovery of the bodies while endeavoring, to extinguish the fire.
Investigative efforts swiftly culminated in the revelation that Gossett, a resident of the burned home, had allegedly started the fire deliberately. His intent, as per the detectives' findings, was to destroy the house entirely.
Following the discovery, Gossett now faces charges that include four counts of Murder in the First Degree While Engaged in Arson, three counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, and a count of Arson of a Dwelling. In the words of Sheriff Chad Chronister, "This is an utterly senseless and horrific crime where four innocent lives were tragically taken due to the evil actions of this man." These remarks were part of the office's public statement, aiming to highlight the quick apprehension of the suspect and the dedication to justice.
While the identities of the victims have yet to be shared publicly, HCSO has indicated that they are working closely with the Medical Examiner's Office and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue to confirm and then disclose this information.
