As NFL teams face the crunch of roster cutdowns, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made the decision to roll with only two quarterbacks for the upcoming season. Sports Illustrated reported that third-string QB John Wolford was one of the final players released as part of the cuts to get to the mandated 53-man lineup on yesterday night.
In what could be seen as a surprising move given Wolford's experience as a Super Bowl champion, the Bucs opted for depth in other positions. The cuts came as teams across the league had to hard decisions, with more than 1,184 players being released and around 500 looking towards the practice squads for a lifeline. For some, the journey ended despite impressive preseason showings, as was the case with wide receiver Cody Thompson, who, according to WFLA, was informed he wouldn't make the final roster.
The Buccaneers appear to be banking on their starters and foregoing the security that a third option under center might have provided. This game of roster roulette also saw other casualties – wide receivers Ryan Miller and Cody Thompson, offensive linemen Luke Haggard and Avery Jones, along with linebackers Vi Jones and Antonio Grier were all part of the cuts shared by heavy.
