The City of Tampa is brightening the start of the school year for certain elders involved in education with a special reward. In collaboration with Seniors in Service, sixty "classroom grandparents" who volunteer their time in support of local students are being gifted $100 worth of "Dash Dollars" each. City officials plan to extend this surprise gesture today, as reported by the City of Tampa official website.
These vouchers, enabled by a DoorDash, Inc. grant, offer flexibility for the volunteers, enabling them to purchase essential classroom supplies or to indulge in personal items. Surprising recipients with vouchers, more than half of them part of Mayor Jane Castor’s Classroom Companions program, are receiving a token of gratitude for their contribution to local education. As these classroom companions bridge generational gaps, the academic improvement that 99% of the 115 students served last school year is a testimony to their significance.
Janelle McGregor, the Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships, outlayed the purpose of this initiative, telling the Tampa government news outlet, "These Dash Dollars will provide much-needed support to classroom grandparents, who dedicate their time to uplifting young learners in our most challenged schools." The Castor's Classroom Companions initiative was launched in 2022, blossoming into a program that currently sustains 37 volunteers at 11 schools across Tampa.
