In response to an escalating water crisis, the Brazos River Authority has moved the City of Taylor, along with other areas serviced by the East Williamson County Regional Water System at Lake Granger into Stage 2 water restrictions. As reported by CBS Austin, this mandate calls on consumers to immediately reduce water usage by 10%.
Details on when lawns may be watered have been outlined, providing that Taylor residents can conduct watering between the hours of midnight to 10 a.m., and again from 8 p.m. to midnight. The restrictions, as specified by FOX 7 Austin, are determined by street address number, with even and odd numbers assigned on specific days. Washing vehicles, which is now restricted, must be conducted with a hand-held bucket or hose, and only during these designated watering times.
Non-essential water usage is strictly prohibited under these new guidelines. Prohibited activities include the wash down of hard-surfaced areas, non-essential building washes, street gutter flushing, and the neglect of repairing known leaks. The restrictions extend also to local restaurants, which are forbidden from serving water to customers unless upon request.
Financial penalties await those who defy the new conservation rules. Violators could face fines up to $500 per day for each infraction. According to CBS Austin, "Failure to repair a controllable leak(s) within a reasonable period after having been given notice," is one of the actions that could trigger these stiff fines, according to the directives laid out by the city. Measures have been put in place to enforce these water-saving policies firmly.
The City of Taylor's full Drought Contingency Plan was made available, offering a transparent view of the steps being taken to preserve the region's water supply in the face of persistent drought conditions.
