Drivers in Texas are facing a prolonged battle with time as they struggle to secure appointments for driver's licenses, a process that has now stretched into months of waiting. An investigation by The Dallas Express has unearthed the unsettling reality that Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) offices are not only grappling with increased wait times from last spring but also a critical shortage of staff that has left approximately one out of every four positions vacant in major cities.

Data from 116 Texas DPS offices indicated that around 45 offices boast an average wait of over 30 days for an appointment, according to NBC 5 DFW. For new residents, the dilemma is exacerbated by the state's 90-day grace period for obtaining a Texas license, a rule that, if not adhered to, could lead to a violation and a $200 fine.

State Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas), vice chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, articulated his dismay to NBC 5 DFW, stating, "I think it's ridiculous," pointing out the glaring issue that, "we don't have the personnel." DPS officials, on their part, are mulling over incentives to entice new workers, including the possibility of virtual appointments, a concept that Senator West found intriguing, likening it to how doctors are now utilizing virtual appointments.

Adding to the complexity of the issue, Texas DPS offices have experienced a high volume of no-shows, with over 2.1 million people not attending their scheduled appointments in 2023 alone. Sheri Gipson, chief of the Texas DPS license division, admitted to NBC 5 DFW that this is far from ideal customer service, "No, sir. It's not. We understand that. We know that there's still room for improvement," and revealed that DPS is working on a system to better predict no-shows and free up spots for others.
