Texas shoppers have the opportunity to stock up on school supplies without the added weight of sales tax this weekend. As noted by a recent announcement, the Texas Comptroller's office is encouraging residents to take advantage of the annual Tax-Free weekend, which begins on Friday, August 9, and continues through midnight on Sunday, August 11. This tax holiday offers a break from state and local sales taxes on most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100, according to the City of Arlington, Texas.
The list of tax-exempt items includes a variety of clothing and footwear, alongside common student necessities such as backpacks, face masks, and an assortment of school supplies. To benefit from the exemption, shoppers must complete their purchases during the specified holiday period. However, items placed on layaway or bought with rain checks during the holiday are eligible. It's important for buyers using a business account for purchases to present an exemption certificate to qualify for the savings.
There's additional flexibility for where and how residents can make their purchases. Whether in-store, online, by telephone, via mail, custom order, or other purchasing methods, as long as the transaction occurs between August 9 and 11, the exemption applies. The Comptroller's guidance states that the crucial factor is the time of the sale, not the delivery date. This means that for online orders, the transaction is deemed complete when the shopper provides payment information within the holiday period, even if the delivery happens at a later date.
This point was clarified with an example, if a consumer enters their credit card details on an online store before the deadline, say Sunday, August 11 at 5:00 p.m., for eligible school supplies, the purchase retains its tax-free status even if the items are shipped days later. Conversely, a delay in payment processing that pushes the completion of the transaction past the midnight cutoff on Sunday makes the purchase taxable.
