The Woodlands Christian Academy (TWCA) is heralding a new era for its arts program with the opening of a $10.8 million Fine Arts Educational Building, dubbed The Benjamin Wells School of the Arts. The official ribbon was cut, signaling the new facility's readiness for the school year. Housed within this state-of-the-art center is what's billed as the largest black box theatre in the Houston area, a feat that has been confirmed by Head of School Julie Ambler in a statement obtained by Hello Woodlands. The 4,225-square-foot theater allows for a seating capacity of 300-400.
This expansion also accompanies the school's steady yearly growth of around 10%. Currently, on its 40-acre campus, the school consists of 12 buildings, many of which are portable. With the new addition, dedicated spaces for art studios, dance, choir, and band halls, sprinkled with various tech enhancements for both analog and digital expressions, clear that TWCA isn't resting on its current state, as reported by The Houston Chronicle. Phil Sweger, Director of Fine Arts, underscored the importance of this development, stating that it accommodates the growing needs of their Fine Arts Department and serves current and future students in the pursuit of excellence for Christ.
The premise, an all-black interior that lacks a definite separation between the stage and the audience, invites a level of interaction and intimacy in performances that conventional theatres often lack—an aspect that theatre teacher Palvin Williams believes will elevate the audience experience, as stated in the same Houston Chronicle interview.
TWCA's plan includes the development of a 250-seat outdoor amphitheater, with completion slated for the fall. This venue, earmarked for concerts and events throughout the year, reaffirms the school's commitment to a comprehensive fine arts curriculum. The drive behind these expansions is shared by Ambler, who proudly asserted in a statement obtained by Hello Woodlands, “I am so grateful for the generous support of our families and friends. Adding this learning space will further enable our students to grow as leaders for Christ and to flourish – spiritually, intellectually, creatively, physically, and socially.”
