The Caldwell County Sheriff's Office has made three arrests in a grim discovery from last month, where a Charlotte man was found shot to death on the side of a highway. In a coordinated law enforcement effort, Felix Alexander Mejia, 21, along with Ricci Elizabeth Cano Puerto, 18, and Rina Marbella Cano, 20, are facing charges in connection to the homicide of 47-year-old Jeimy Alexander Bohorquez-Reyes, whose body was found on July 28 along Highway 321 in Caldwell County, as reported by WSOCTV.
Mejia has been charged with first-degree murder and, the two women, Cano Puerto and Cano, have been charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder, according to officials. The sheriff’s office revealed that Mejia is also accused in relation to arson attempts – his arrest warrant includes "burning personal property" and "malicious use of an incendiary device" in Mecklenburg County. While Mejia is being held without bond, Cano Puerto's bond is set at $250,000, and Rina Cano was already in custody in Mecklenburg County on separate charges when the warrant was issued, as WCNC details.
Following the reports of Bohorquez-Reyes' death, his vehicle, a burgundy 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was located in Charlotte, showing signs of arson, which triggered an investigation that spanned multiple jurisdictions including the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and the NC State Bureau of Investigation. This collective investigative effort led to the identification and charging of the three suspects linked to the homicide, as noted by QCNews.
The investigation continues, as does the legal process for the accused, which will unfold in the courts over the coming months.
