An Erie County customer's trust was betrayed when a contractor hired to install flooring allegedly burglarized the residence. Perkins Township Police Department has arrested 29-year-old Aaron Short from Toledo, who is currently facing burglary and theft charges. Short, employed by a local contracting company, is accused of abusing his work access to steal from an absent homeowner, according to Cleveland19.
Upon investigation, authorities discovered Short's alleged thefts while contracted for flooring work at a Perkins Township home. "Short used his opportunity inside the residence to access other areas and steal while the homeowner was not present," reported the Perkins Township Police Department in a Facebook post. The WTOL noted that there has been an uptick in similar criminal reports lately.
In response to this incident and an increase in similar complaints, Perkins Township police have issued guidance to residents. The department suggests homeowners try to be present when contractors work or ensure valuables are secured if that's not possible. The advice also includes vetting companies by obtaining references to verify reputability, as covered by 13ABC.
The arrest highlights a broader issue of contractor scams plaguing the area. Short is currently booked at Erie County Jail pending further legal proceedings. As police warn of the potential of scams like these, residents are reminded to exercise caution when allowing individuals into their homes. Perkins Township police underscore this message by sharing tips for hiring reputable services and securing possessions, especially when the homeowner can't be present.
