Philadelphia's streets were rocked by a shooting incident on July 25, on the 1300 block of Porter Street, that resulted in charges against two men. The defendants, Salvatore Branco, 27, and Rhett Mazza, 37, reportedly exchanged gunfire around 5 p.m., which led to one elderly woman being injured and the death of a dog.
According to FOX29, during the shootout, approximately 20 shots were fired between Branco and Mazza in broad daylight, as families and children sought cover. District Attorney Larry Krasner described the incident as "dangerous, reckless, wildly irresponsible" and commented on the defendants' complete disregard for public safety. Additionally, Branco is being held responsible for straw purchasing 11 firearms, a criminal act pointedly criticized by the DA's office for fueling such violent events.
Branco's involvement with illegal firearms came to light when three guns he obtained were discovered at different crime scenes in Philadelphia, raising serious concerns about the trace of illegal weaponry in the community. As reported by NBC Philadelphia, some of these firearms were located in a home with other illegal weapons, including one linked to a homicide.
Investigators noted that Branco had never reported any of the firearms as stolen, emphasizing the role of straw purchases in the circulation of guns used in crimes. "These arrests send a clear message to those who terrorize our community and traffic guns that they will be held accountable for their willful disregard for public safety," DA Larry Krasner stated, as quoted by 6ABC. Branco surrendered to police and relinquished the gun he used during the incident subsequent to the shootout.
As legal proceedings move forward, the community awaits the preliminary hearings for the accused, with Branco's scheduled for August 30, and Mazza's following on September 6.
