Two suspects were arrested on Tuesday after attempting to rob an undercover officer during a narcotics operation in Santa Rosa. The Santa Rosa Police Department was conducting an operation targeting drug trafficking, specifically the distribution of lethal fentanyl pills disguised as prescription medication. The undercover officer, part of the Narcotics Crimes Investigation Team, was to exchange cash for 10,000 counterfeit Oxycodone pills, as reported by the Santa Rosa Police Department.
The transaction took a dangerous turn when suspects identified as Ulises Vera, 25, from Bakersfield, and Manuel Cardenas Jr., 28, from Fresno, produced handguns and robbed the undercover officer of his personal effects and the buy money. The SRPD had a surveillance team in place from both their department and the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, which intervened and initiated a rescue of the undercover officer. Despite a chaotic escape attempt in a red Acura and an ensuing collision with police vehicles, both Vera and Cardenas were apprehended within five minutes of the initial contact.
Detectives on the scene seized two loaded firearms, additional ammunition, US currency, and property belonging to the undercover officer from the suspects' vehicle. Notably, no narcotics were found with the suspects at the time of arrest. The Santa Rosa Police Department provided an update on the case, noting the significance of such undercover operations in thwarting the illegal narcotic trade that affects community safety through addiction, overdoses, and related violent crimes.
No injuries were reported among the law enforcement officers involved in the incident. Cardenas sustained minor injuries when he was momentarily dragged by the fleeing vehicle. Following medical treatment, he was booked into Sonoma County Jail along with Vera on multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, and possession of firearms and ammunition by a felon. Bail for each was set at a heightened $1,000,000. The ongoing efforts of the SRPD Narcotics Investigations Team have led to the seizure of significant quantities of methamphetamine, illegal drug manufacturing equipment, a considerable amount of currency, and numerous firearms in the first half of 2024 alone.
