On the afternoon of July 29, a passenger on a Santa Monica Big Blue Bus was violently assaulted, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement. The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) received the call and reported to the 3200 block of Santa Monica Blvd. The victim was blindsided by an assault while seated, sustaining serious injuries and ultimately requiring hospital care. Details from the official press release indicated that the assault appeared to be unprovoked.
The suspect had vanished by the time officers arrived, but investigators were soon on his trail. Utilizing surveillance footage from the Big Blue Bus, neighborhood cameras, and electronic TAP card records, detectives pieced together the day’s events. Their efforts culminated in the identification of a suspect, 34-year-old Erik Morgan from Los Angeles. Over a week later, on August 9, authorities located and arrested Morgan.
Following his arraignment on August 13, Morgan now awaits trial on numerous felony charges, including mayhem, assault likely to cause great bodily injury, aggravated battery, and a probation violation. He remains in the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, according to the official report.
