A fortunate Wayne County man is now a millionaire after scratching off a winning ticket in the Michigan Lottery's Gold Multiplier instant game. The 53-year-old, who has chosen to stay anonymous, purchased the fateful ticket at the Tel-Wick Amoco Service Center on Telegraph Road in Taylor, according to a statement obtained by ClickOnDetroit.
"I scratched the ticket and saw I matched a number, but I didn't scratch the winning amount right away," the winner recounted in a statement to MLive. Victory did initially not seem fully real for the man, who finished scratching the rest of the ticket to only find that sole winning match. Upon realizing the prize was $1 million, he was understandably shocked, describing the experience as “life-changing." He also quickly shared the news with his son and fiancé.
At the Michigan Lottery headquarters, the man chose to take a one-time, lump-sum payment of $693,000, MLive reported. With this sum, he has expressed intentions to financially assist his family, although specific plans for the funds were not shared publicly.
Additional details regarding the Gold Multiplier game and its impact on players were provided by MI Lottery Connect. Since its launch in March, the game has awarded over $21 million in prizes to players, with more than $30 million in prizes still remaining. The game is part of a larger lottery system where, in 2023 alone, players casually won nearly $1.8 billion through instant games. The Gold Multiplier instant game, available for $10 a ticket, offers payouts that can reach up to $1 million.
While this Wayne County resident's fortune is a cause for celebration, a contrasting note of caution was struck by MLive, reminding players to promptly check their tickets. Even as fortunes change hands daily, a Mega Millions winner from Southfield saw a $1 million prize go unclaimed in 2023, leading the prize to benefit the state’s School Aid Fund instead. Meanwhile, the most recent Michigan winners of a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot were members of the Breakfast Club lottery club, which collected a $842 million jackpot in June and intended to purchase a home in Florida and travel.
