Westland Woman Charged with Assault, DUI in Vehicular Rampage Leaving Man Severely Injured

A Westland woman, April Marie Graves, 43, faces multiple felony charges after a series of intentional vehicle collisions left a man severely injured. The incidents occurred on Saturday on Wildwood Street and are alleged to involve Graves driving while intoxicated, according to CBS News Detroit.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy described the event "I cannot think of a more stunning example of alleged criminal behavior of a driver behind the steering wheel of a motor vehicle. The result is severe injuries to two Wayne County citizens that will be with them for their lifetimes," as reported by CBS News Detroit. Graves's arraignment yesterday came with serious charges, among them two counts of assault with intent to murder and one count of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, and reflects the grave nature of the accusations against her given the injuries sustained by the victims in the crash, Graves also received a $850,000 cash or surety bond as consequence of the charges levied against her.

During the incident, a pedestrian was pinned underneath one of the vehicles until he was rescued by the fire department and transported to the hospital; another man suffered injuries after being pinned between two cars by Graves's vehicle, with FOX 2 Detroit noting witnesses saw her "laughing" post-collision until police detained her. Beyond the immediate harm inflicted, the suspect is accused of malicious destruction of property, with allegations of her intentions to cause great bodily harm.

Compounding the charges are reports of an open alcohol container found in Graves's vehicle at the time of her arrest; WWJ Newsradio 950 outlined the thorough list of over a dozen charges, a count of open alcohol in a motor vehicle included among them, Graves due back in court for a probable cause hearing set for August 22 and a preliminary examination scheduled for August 29.
