Orange County's key transport hub, John Wayne Airport (JWA), has received a substantial cash injection from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to improve accessibility and energy efficiency. A $20 million grant is set to fund essence changes at the airport, enhancing the travel experience specifically for individuals requiring greater accessibility.

Renovations are to be underway soon to modernize 12 public restrooms to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. The airport will also be looking to better accommodate families and nursing mothers by adding a Universal Changing Station in Terminal B and two nursing pods. "This $20 million is an investment in John Wayne Airport as a vital gateway for Orange County’s business community,” Chairman Donald P. Wagner of the Third District stated in an announcement by John Wayne Airport. He emphasized that a well-functioning, accessible airport is essential for economic growth and maintaining Orange County's competitive edge.

Addressing environmental concerns, the airport will be including energy-efficient lighting fixtures and controls in its renovation plan. Supervisor Katrina Foley of the Fifth District expressed that the grant will also support JWA's goals of sustainability. "The restroom and path-of-travel improvements will make a meaningful difference for our travelers, while the energy-efficient upgrades will reduce our environmental impact," Foley told John Wayne Airport.

JWA was one of only 62 projects nationwide to snag funding from the FAA, out of a competitive field of 353 applicants requesting a combined $1.38 billion. "By modernizing our facilities and addressing accessibility, we are demonstrating our commitment to ensuring every visitor has a superior experience when they travel through our Airport," Airport Director Charlene Reynolds expressed in a statement.

An FAA spokesperson highlighted the importance of prioritizing both accessibility and energy efficiency in improvement projects across the nation. “We are proud to support John Wayne Airport's efforts to improve accessibility and sustainability for its passengers,” the spokesperson said in a comment to John Wayne Airport.
