In a sobering account of roadway recklessness, a 51-year-old bicyclist has perished following a callous hit-and-run incident in Northridge, Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department Valley Traffic Division Detectives are intensively investigating the circumstances that led to a man being fatally struck while riding his bicycle on the evening of September 19, 2024.
As CBS News Los Angeles reports, the victim, Danny Oerlemans, met his tragic end near the crossroad of Lindley Avenue and Napa Street at approximately 9:20 p.m. A vehicle, for which details remain sparse, is said to be the instigator of a sequence of impacts that flung Oerlemans off his bike and left him vulnerable on the street. Subsequently, it is believed by the LAPD that between four or five other vehicles compounded the atrocity, with the initial perpetrator and possibly others failing to halt their course or render aid to the stricken cyclist.
Oerlemans suffered blows not once, but in a series of heartless strikes, making emergency responders' efforts futile as he was declared deceased at the scene. This information was corroborated by the Los Angeles Police Department's official communication. According to LAPD officials, two gray vehicles - a Honda and a pickup truck - are implicated in the secondary impacts that followed the initial fatal blow.
Seeking to spur public involvement and justice, the LAPD reminds the community of the standing reward, up to $50,000, for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of hit-and-run offenders. This fund was established as a part of Los Angeles' firm stance against the epidemic of hit-and-runs which, was revealed by an amended City Council regulation on April 15, 2015. The LAPD has made a clear appeal to bystanders and the wider public to come forward with any knowledge that may bring resolution to this case and solace to the mourning.
