In a paradigm where the grandeur of Hollywood's affluence intersects with the lawlessness of urban decay, residents of Hollywood Hills are witnessing an escalating crisis as two multimillion-dollar mansions fall prey to vandalism and neglect. At the heart of the issue is John Powers Middleton, identified as the son of the Philadelphia Phillies owner and the proprietor of the beleaguered properties, as reported by KTLA.
Neighbors have reported distressing scenes at the properties, with one of the homes on Sunset Plaza Drive exhibiting the recent adornment of graffiti and hosting illegal parties that overwhelmed local infrastructure with "50 squad cars and three helicopters," Jorgen Christiansson, a resident, told KTLA, expressing dismay over the mansion's decline, second mansion owned by Middleton on Mulholland Drive has similarly become a hotspot for law enforcement due to recurrent incidents laced with burglary and trespassing as the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed frequent calls to the scene.
Subsequent arrests and the deployment of security personnel have thus far failed to stem the tide of squatters and taggers which highlights past arrests, including an armed man living illegally on the premises, despite attempts to clean and secure the properties, as per ABC7. Furthermore, emotional testimonies from long-time residents like the Gorbis family, who knew the previous owner and watched the mansion's construction, signify a community sentiment marred by the structure's deterioration and misuse.
As the situation draws the ire of the city officials, Councilmember Nithya Raman has stepped in, making it clear that "This owner is an egregious violation of the law and we are elevating the issue with the abandoned buildings unit at the Department of Building and Safety to ensure that the fullest extent of enforcement is being implemented urgently and swiftly," in statements obtained by FOX LA.
