
An incident involving Anaheim Police Department officers resulted in the shooting and subsequent hospitalization of a man identified as James Brasher during a response to a domestic disturbance call on Monday night. According to the Anaheim Police Department, on September 16, 2024, the confrontation with the 33-year-old occurred at around 8 p.m., on the 700 block of West Santa Ana Street. Following the confrontation, Brasher was struck by gunfire twice.
Police provided few details on what transpired before or during the confrontation. However, they affirm that Brasher was released from the hospital after several hours and then arrested. The investigation aimed to deeply understand the events surrounding the police shooting is still ongoing. Notably, police reported finding a weapon at the scene, reinforcing their narrative of encountering an armed individual.
Further investigation by the authorities revealed that Brasher was on parole, deemed "armed and dangerous," and had a no-bail arrest warrant pending against him. Following his release from hospital care, he faced charges including felony aggravated assault and resisting an officer, in addition to violating a court order and his parole conditions. The offender is now being held in custody at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
As reported by the Anaheim Police Department, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office is currently undertaking the investigation into the shooting. Other entities including the Anaheim PD Homicide Detectives, the Major Incident Review Team (MIRT), Internal Affairs, and members from the Police Review Board (PRB) and Office of Independent Review (OIR) also responded. They continue to actively engage in the examination of the situation to ensure thorough evaluation of the case.
