Residents of Joshua Tree breathed a sigh of relief yesterday after a tense search for an armed suspect concluded with an arrest. Jonathan Rodriguez, a 20-year-old Hispanic male, who had been described by the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department as "armed and dangerous," was apprehended without incident inside a home on Pueblo Trail, a marked departure from his earlier confrontation with law enforcement.
Initially, the pursuit began in the early morning hours of September 21, when Morongo Basin Sheriff Station deputies joined forces with the Riverside Sheriff’s Department. Confronted, Rodriguez abandoned his vehicle on the 60800 block of Mountain View Trail in Joshua Tree and fired several gunshots before fleeing on foot. During this encounter, thankfully, no officers suffered injuries, as reported by the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department.
The subsequent search operation blanketed the local community, heightening anxiety as residents were advised to keep doors and windows sealed and to remain indoors for their safety. Rodriguez's description, including his height of 5'6" and weight of 110 pounds, was widely disseminated in the hopes that a member of the public could aid in his capture. The community's vigilance was answered when, later in the day, Rodriguez was located, as updated by a Sheriff-Coroner Department release.
The Sheriff-Coroner Department has expressed its gratitude towards the Joshua Tree residents and visitors for their patience and the pivotal role their tips played in the resolution of the incident.
